Billboard charting artist Betty Reed is shaking up Nashville with her edgy sound and contemporary take on indie-pop music. Her expressive vocals and clever lyrics resonate in every song. Drawing on life experiences, Betty Reed relates stories of everyday life through her music. Struggles. Triumphs. Journeys.
After moving to Nashville, TN from Boston, MA, Betty Reed released four country-pop singles throughout 2020: Her, Drunk On You, I’ll Get By, and Good Days. In the winter of 2020/2021, Betty Reed released three electro-pop singles: Fall Apart, Never Enough, and My Way. On September 3, 2021, Betty Reed released her six-song EP, “Mistakes Made, Lessons Learned.”
For “Mistakes Made, Lessons Learned,” Betty Reed collaborated with Nashville producer Bill McDermott. Reed wanted to create an EP of songs that encompass various genres of music: singer-songwriter (Let It Out), alternative (Karma), rock-pop (This Time, Misunderstood), and indie-pop (On My Mind, Happy), and McDermott’s ability to bring his depth of music knowledge to the project was the perfect fit. The EP showcases Betty Reed’s ability to write and perform across the musical spectrum. The name of the EP is derived from all the missteps she has taken in her life and her career, and putting it all behind her as she moves forward.
In 2022, Betty Reed released two pop/rock singles, Without You and Shallow End.
Many of Betty Reed’s songs are about her experience dealing with depression — not so much the bleak side of it, but the ways in which she finds her way out of the dark and into the light. You can hear this theme in Shallow End, Let It Out, I’ll Get By and Happy. Fall Apart turns this idea upside down — that sense that when you are finally in a good place, you just know it’s not going to last.
Other songs tackle issues around toxic relationships. Her is about walking away from a relationship with a heroin addict. My Way is about practicing self-love when people (who supposedly love you) say cruel things to you. Misunderstood is about being stalked/hit on and finding the strength to assert yourself. Karma is about that moment you are free from an abusive relationship and start living your best life, while the other person finally gets their comeuppance. Without You is about ignoring the naysayers in your life and finding success on your own terms.
“Even though the subject matter of most of my songs is serious, I mask it with an upbeat vibe—it’s this veneer of cheeriness that you feel you have to project in order to feel normal.”
Betty Reed’s early influences (and favorite artists) span the music spectrum, and include Tom Petty, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Radiohead, David Bowie, Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson, and Bob Marley.
